Your customers can now buy without leaving Microsoft Copilot
Shopify has announced that shoppers can now discover and purchase products from Shopify stores directly inside Microsoft Copilot, without visiting the merchant’s website first. This is powered by Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts and Copilot Checkout, which move product discovery and checkout into the same AI conversation.
At WebPulse, we’ve been writing about how AI is reshaping online visibility and conversions, including “The 3 Biggest Drivers of AI Visibility for Businesses” and “How to Make AEO & GEO Profitable (Not Just Noisy).” This Shopify–Copilot launch is what those trends look like in practice: AI is no longer just influencing what people see, it is becoming the interface where they discover, evaluate, and buy.
What Shopify means by “agentic commerce”
Shopify uses the term “agentic commerce” to describe shopping journeys where AI agents help customers discover, compare, and purchase products entirely within a conversation. Instead of browsing a site or typing keywords into a search bar, a shopper can ask Copilot something like “Find me a birthday gift for a 10-year-old who likes art under $30,” get recommendations, ask follow-up questions, and then check out within the chat.
Shopify lays out this vision in “How agentic commerce works,” explaining how AI agents discover products through Shopify Catalog and complete transactions via Shopify Checkout. Behind the scenes, a few key pieces work together:
- Shopify Catalog sends structured product data (titles, descriptions, images, pricing, inventory, shipping) to AI platforms in real time.
- AI agents like Microsoft Copilot use that data to surface relevant products and rank them based on relevance, data quality, price, and engagement.
- Shopify Checkout processes the transaction—handling tax, payment, fraud checks, and fulfillment—either via an embedded checkout (like Copilot Checkout) or an in‑app browser.
- Shopify admin still shows the order with attribution to the AI channel that drove the sale, and you remain the merchant of record.
Shopify’s goal is simple: build commerce infrastructure so that wherever AI conversations happen, your products can be discovered and purchased.
What’s new specifically with Microsoft Copilot
For Microsoft Copilot, Shopify is doing three notable things:
- Making your products discoverable in Copilot via Shopify Catalog
Eligible stores with products in Shopify Catalog can have their items discovered through Microsoft Copilot, alongside other AI channels like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Mode, and Gemini. You don’t need a custom app or extra integration just to be present. - Powering native Copilot Checkout with Shopify
Copilot Checkout lets buyers complete purchases directly in the Copilot interface, while Shopify Checkout runs the transaction behind the scenes. In the background, this plugs into Shopify’s broader “agentic commerce” infrastructure, including the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard co‑developed with Google and backed by companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Visa, as outlined in “How agentic commerce works.” - Giving merchants channel-level control
Inside Shopify admin, under Settings → Sales Channels → Agentic Storefronts, merchants can manage AI channels (including Copilot), decide whether to allow direct checkout inside the AI, or route buyers back to their online store. For Copilot and Google’s AI Mode, you can toggle direct checkout on or off; for ChatGPT, buyers complete checkout on your site via an in‑app browser.
There are no extra listing or special channel fees for Agentic Storefronts beyond your normal payment processing rates, and you retain ownership of the customer relationship and data.
How this connects to AI visibility and profitable AEO/GEO
In “The 3 Biggest Drivers of AI Visibility for Businesses,” we broke AI visibility down into three pillars: clear messaging, strong site foundations, and credible, structured data that AI systems can trust. Shopify’s Copilot integration makes those pillars directly revenue-impacting. If your product data is vague, inconsistent, or incomplete, AI agents have less confidence in recommending you when it matters.
In “How to Make AEO & GEO Profitable (Not Just Noisy),” we argued that AI Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) only work when they’re tied to measurable outcomes like leads, orders, and lifetime value—not just “mentions” in AI answers. Selling directly inside Microsoft Copilot is a textbook example of that mindset: AI visibility now connects straight to checkout, not just awareness.
This is AI visibility turning into AI revenue. The same structured data, policies, and content that help you show up in AI answers now also determine whether you’re the store that gets the sale when Copilot is ready to recommend a product and complete the transaction.
What Shopify merchants should do next
If you run a Shopify store and want to be ready for Copilot and other AI shopping channels, here are practical steps to take now:
- Confirm your eligibility and Agentic Storefronts status
Check your Shopify admin for Agentic Storefronts, verify that your products are in Shopify Catalog, and see if Copilot is available as a channel for your target regions. - Decide your comfort level with in‑chat checkout
Use the Agentic Storefronts settings to choose whether Copilot should allow direct checkout or send shoppers back to your online store. You can start conservatively and open up more as you gain confidence in how AI-driven orders perform. - Treat product data as AI‑facing content
AI agents don’t “browse” like humans—they read structured data. Clear titles, rich descriptions, accurate attributes, and up‑to‑date price and inventory are the foundation of effective AEO and GEO. Shopify underscores this in “How agentic commerce works,” and we expand on it in “The 3 Biggest Drivers of AI Visibility for Businesses.” - Solidify your policies and knowledge base
Your Terms, Privacy, and Refund policies, plus FAQs and shipping details, are now inputs for what AI tells shoppers about your brand. Shopify’s Knowledge Base tools are designed to feed verified answers into AI agents so they don’t have to guess about returns, shipping, or core policies, as highlighted in “How agentic commerce works.”
WebPulse’s take
The Shopify–Copilot integration is a clear signal: AI isn’t just a layer on top of search; it’s becoming the place where discovery, evaluation, and purchase all happen in one continuous conversation. The brands that win will be the ones that treat AI assistants like real storefronts where they need to “rank,” not side projects.
If you want help getting your Shopify store ready for agentic commerce—so Copilot, ChatGPT, and other AI platforms can actually drive profitable orders instead of just buzz—WebPulse can audit your product data, policies, and AI visibility, then build a plan to turn AEO and GEO into measurable revenue.
