Yesterday, Google announced what it’s calling the biggest shift to search in 25 years.

That should get every business owner’s attention.

At Google I/O, Google revealed major updates that make search feel much more like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI tools.

And if your company depends on:

  • online visibility
  • SEO
  • Google traffic
  • inbound leads
  • or being discovered online

…this matters.

A lot.

Search Is Becoming a Conversation

Traditional search has looked roughly the same for decades.

You type keywords into a search bar.

Google shows you a list of websites.

You click through.

That model is changing quickly.

Google announced that search is becoming much more conversational.

Users will increasingly be able to:

  • ask full questions instead of short keywords
  • upload images, videos, and files into search
  • interact with AI-generated answers
  • ask follow-up questions naturally
  • continue the conversation inside search itself

In other words:

Search is becoming more like a chatbot.

Google Is Moving Beyond “Blue Links”

You’ve already seen hints of this through AI Overviews.

Those summaries sitting at the top of Google results?

They’re becoming much more powerful.

Instead of simply showing information, Google is moving toward helping users actually complete tasks.

That means users will increasingly:

  • compare products
  • plan trips
  • evaluate options
  • gather recommendations
  • and make decisions

…without leaving the search experience.

This is a major change in how information gets consumed online.

AI Search Is Growing Faster Than Most Businesses Realize

Earlier this year, Google’s CEO confirmed that roughly 50% of searches already contain AI summaries.

Now Google is investing even more heavily into making those AI experiences richer, more interactive, and more capable.

If Google is putting this level of investment into AI search, the direction is pretty clear.

Expect AI summaries to appear in far more searches moving forward.

That means:

Traditional click behavior is changing.

Search behavior is changing.

Buyer behavior is changing.

What This Means for SEO

One of the biggest misconceptions right now is that SEO is somehow disappearing.

That’s not what’s happening.

SEO is evolving.

Traditional fundamentals still matter:

  • technical health
  • authority
  • backlinks
  • content quality
  • topical relevance
  • search intent

But now businesses also need to think about:

  • AI visibility
  • Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
  • Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
  • content that AI systems can interpret and surface

Because increasingly, the question becomes:

Does your company show up inside the answer?

Not just:

Does your website rank on page one?

Why Businesses Should Pay Attention Right Now

This is one of those moments that feels a lot like the early days of Google.

The businesses that understood online visibility early gained enormous advantages.

We may be entering another version of that shift.

Nobody knows exactly how AI search evolves over the next five years.

But we do know:

Google is investing heavily.

Users are adapting quickly.

And search is becoming increasingly AI-driven.

Ignoring that trend probably isn’t a great strategy.

The Opportunity

The companies paying attention today are building an advantage for tomorrow.

That doesn’t mean panicking.

It means:

  • understanding where search is heading
  • strengthening your online presence
  • improving visibility foundations
  • and making sure your business is positioned for how buyers will search next

The businesses doing this work early are likely going to be much better positioned over the next several years.

I’m the CEO of WebPulse, where we’ve been obsessing over websites and SEO for longer than I care to admit. These days my real job is big‑picture chaos management: steering the team, making bets, and deciding which “shiny new thing” in marketing is actually worth our time. Right now that obsession is AI visibility and AI search—the new era where your brand has to convince both people and machines it deserves to be seen. This is where I share my running commentary, half‑educated guesses, and occasionally correct predictions about where AI‑powered search is heading and how smart businesses can ride that wave instead of getting crushed by it.
