Can AI do SEO?
Technically, yes.
AI can help with keyword research, content outlines, audits, data analysis, metadata, competitive research, and optimization recommendations.
But the better question is:
Can AI do SEO well without human strategy?
That answer is a lot more complicated.
In a recent WebPulse conversation, Gerald Huffman and Chris Winberg reacted to several AI search headlines, including whether AI can do SEO, how AI agents are changing workflows, why ChatGPT shopping and Visa’s payment integration matter, and what happens when AI confidently makes up information a business never published.
The biggest takeaway was simple:
AI can make SEO faster.
But it can also make bad SEO faster.
And that distinction matters a lot for businesses trying to improve visibility in Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and the next generation of search.
AI-Assisted SEO Is Not The Same As AI-Run SEO
There is a major difference between using AI to assist SEO and handing your entire SEO strategy to AI.
AI-assisted SEO can be incredibly useful.
It can help teams move faster with:
- keyword research
- content briefs
- competitive analysis
- technical audits
- metadata drafts
- internal linking ideas
- page structure recommendations
- content optimization
- data analysis
At WebPulse, we use AI every day.
Tools, agents, MCPs, Perplexity Computer, and AI-assisted research workflows are changing how digital work gets done.
But AI is not a replacement for strategy.
It is a multiplier.
If the strategy is strong, AI can help execute it faster.
If the strategy is weak, AI can help produce more mediocre work at a much faster pace.
That is where businesses need to be careful.
The Problem With Letting AI “Do SEO” For You
AI models are trained on internet data.
That includes helpful SEO research, documentation, case studies, forums, articles, and public discussions.
But it also includes outdated advice, oversimplified tactics, repeated myths, and generic SEO content.
That means AI can often produce an answer that sounds confident but lands in the middle of everything it has seen.
In other words:
AI can create a middle ground of mediocrity.
That does not mean AI is useless.
It means AI needs a human strategist who understands:
- what is true
- what is outdated
- what applies to the business
- what does not apply
- what buyers actually search for
- what content needs to exist
- what Google and AI systems are actually rewarding
- what will help turn visibility into business
AI can produce outputs.
Humans still need to decide whether those outputs are good.
AI Can Repeat Bad SEO Advice
One of the biggest risks with AI SEO is that it can confidently repeat ideas that sound right but do not actually move the needle.
That might look like:
- generic blog content
- keyword stuffing disguised as optimization
- thin “answer” content
- surface-level service pages
- content written for algorithms instead of buyers
- outdated SEO tactics
- broad articles that do not match real search intent
For example, asking ChatGPT to “write me a blog about lawn care in Louisiana” may produce something readable.
But readable is not the same as strategic.
The question is not:
“Can AI write the blog?”
The question is:
“Will this content help the right buyer find, trust, and choose this company?”
That requires research, positioning, judgment, and context.
AI Search Is Bigger Than Traditional SEO
Traditional SEO used to be mostly about ranking in Google’s blue links.
That still matters.
But the search landscape is expanding.
Businesses now need to think about visibility across:
- Google Search
- Google AI Overviews
- ChatGPT
- Perplexity
- Gemini
- Microsoft Copilot
- AI shopping experiences
- third-party platforms
- YouTube
- reviews
- websites
- citations
The game is no longer only:
“Can we rank for this keyword?”
It is also:
“Can AI understand, trust, and recommend our business?”
That is where AI visibility, AEO, and GEO become important.
But again, the fundamentals still matter.
AI visibility still depends heavily on strong content, clear structure, real expertise, authority signals, and a website that tells the truth about what your business does.
AI Commerce Is Changing The Customer Journey
One of the headlines discussed in the video was Visa integrating its payment network into ChatGPT, allowing AI agents to shop and pay for users.
That sounds like a payments story.
It is actually much bigger.
It points to a future where AI is not just helping people find information.
AI may help people:
- discover products
- compare options
- evaluate companies
- make recommendations
- complete purchases
- take action without visiting traditional websites first
The human may not always be as involved in the customer journey as they used to be.
That should get every business owner’s attention.
Because if AI agents are helping users decide what to buy, who to hire, or which company to trust, your business needs to be visible and understandable inside those systems.
AI Hallucinations Make Your Website More Important
There is another major risk businesses need to understand:
AI can hallucinate.
In the video, Chris shared an example of an AI-generated blog post that made up pricing for a company that had never published pricing online.
That is not a small issue.
AI can fabricate:
- pricing
- product details
- service comparisons
- business information
- claims
- timelines
- specifications
- capabilities
And because AI answers often sound authoritative, users may believe them.
That is why your website may become more important, not less.
Your website needs to act as the source of truth.
It should clearly explain:
- what you do
- who you serve
- what you offer
- what you do not offer
- your pricing approach when appropriate
- your capabilities
- your process
- your positioning
- your proof
- your expertise
If AI is going to talk about your business, you need to give it accurate information to pull from.
Otherwise, it may guess.
And you may not like what it guesses.
The Website Is Still The Source Of Truth
For a while, many people wondered whether websites would become less important as AI search grew.
But the opposite may be true.
As AI tools become more involved in search, shopping, recommendations, and decision-making, businesses need a clear, accurate, crawlable, authoritative place where their information lives.
That place is still the website.
Your website should help AI systems understand your company with confidence.
That means:
- clear service pages
- specific capability pages
- strong homepage messaging
- accurate product information
- helpful educational content
- structured answers
- consistent terminology
- updated pricing or pricing context when appropriate
- real expertise
- proof and case studies
AI visibility does not replace your website.
It raises the stakes for your website.
Human Expertise Still Wins
The strongest SEO work has never been about blindly following a checklist.
It requires judgment.
It requires understanding the business.
It requires understanding buyers.
It requires knowing which keywords matter and which ones are distractions.
It requires knowing when content is generic, when claims are unsupported, when AI is making things up, and when a page needs stronger proof.
That is where human expertise still matters.
AI can help move faster.
But it cannot replace the strategic thinking behind good SEO and AI visibility.
At least not if the goal is to win.
The Real Answer: Use AI With Strategy
The businesses that win in the next era of search will not be the ones that blindly hand everything to AI.
They will be the ones that use AI with strategy.
They will use AI to:
- speed up research
- find patterns
- analyze content
- identify gaps
- improve workflows
- support technical work
- create better starting points
But they will still rely on human expertise to:
- choose the right strategy
- verify accuracy
- protect brand trust
- understand buyer intent
- prioritize revenue-driving opportunities
- build authority
- make the final call
That is the difference between AI-assisted SEO and mediocre AI-run SEO.
