GEO FOR GOOGLE AI MODE

Google Search just changed. Your visibility strategy needs to match.

Google AI Mode doesn't rank your page — it pulls passages from it. A single AI Mode answer synthesizes content from an average of 22.9 distinct domains. Your traditional Position 1 ranking is no longer the goal. Getting your content extracted and cited is.

97% of AI Mode responses include at least one citation. The average answer features 3.3 distinct brands or entities — more than double AI Overviews' 1.3. And 68% of pages cited in AI Mode answers weren't in the organic top 10 for the same query. The search results you've spent years optimizing for are no longer the whole game.

PLAIN ENGLISH

How Google AI Mode actually decides who to cite.

AI Mode uses a technique called query fan-out. When a user asks a complex question, AI Mode doesn't just run one search — it decomposes the query into multiple sub-queries, retrieves sources in parallel across Google's full index, and synthesizes a cited answer from the best passage matches across all of them.

This means citation happens at the passage level, not the page level. AI Mode evaluates whether a specific section of your page strongly answers one of its sub-queries. A page that ranks #8 in Google but has a perfectly structured answer to one sub-query can earn a citation chip alongside pages that rank #1. And a page cited across multiple sub-queries shows up multiple times in the same answer.

AI Mode also pulls from Google's Knowledge Graph, real-time feeds, shopping data, and local information — making it the broadest retrieval system of any AI engine. The businesses that win here are the ones whose content is structured to be extracted at the passage level, not just ranked at the page level.

CITATION SIGNALS

What AI Mode evaluates before extracting your content.

AI Mode evaluates at the passage level — not the page level. The question isn't whether your page ranks. It's whether your content answers one of the sub-queries AI Mode is running, in a format it can extract.

22.9

Domains cited per answer

AI Mode pulls from an average of 22.9 distinct domains per answer — nearly 3x more than ChatGPT. For commercial queries, that rises to 27.9 sources. The citation pool is wide, which means more businesses have a realistic shot at being included — if their content is passage-ready.

97%

Responses include citations

97% of AI Mode responses include at least one citation — the highest citation inclusion rate of any AI engine. The average answer features 3.3 distinct brands or entities, vs. 1.3 in AI Overviews. Being cited in AI Mode means being seen in the search experience that's rapidly replacing the traditional blue-link SERP.

Ahrefs, December 2025 · analysis of 730,000 AI Mode query-response pairs

68%

Citations from outside top 10

68% of pages cited in AI Mode answers were not in the organic top 10 for the main query. AI Mode's query fan-out retrieves across a wide source pool — passage relevance and structure matter more than ranking position for many sub-queries. This is the biggest structural shift in search visibility in a decade.

Surfer study via Averi.ai, June 2026

13.7%

AI Mode ≠ AI Overviews

AI Mode and AI Overviews share only 13.7% of their citation sources — and only 16% textual overlap — despite 86% semantic similarity in their answers. Optimizing for AI Overviews is not the same as optimizing for AI Mode. They draw from different source pools and use different retrieval logic.

Analysis of 730,000 AI Mode query-response pairs, December 2025

45%

Commercial intent = more sources

Tool-seeking and buying-intent queries pull 27.9 sources on average vs. 19.2 for broad category terms — about 45% wider. The closer a query gets to a purchase decision, the more domains AI Mode pulls from. High-commercial-intent queries are where citation breadth is highest and where being included matters most.

8%

Organic click-through drops by half

When an AI summary is present, only 8% of users click traditional organic results — down from 15% without an AI summary. If AI Mode is answering your buyers' questions and not citing you, you're losing traffic you can't see in Google Search Console. The measurement gap makes this a hidden threat for most businesses.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The biggest shift in search since mobile. Most businesses aren't ready.

AI Mode is now available in more than 180 countries. It's not a Search Labs experiment anymore — it's the default search experience for hundreds of millions of users, and it's displacing the organic rankings businesses spent years building.

Traditional SEO measures success by position and click volume. AI Mode makes both metrics increasingly unreliable. Position 1 gets less traffic when an AI answer appears above it. Click volume drops when the AI answer is good enough. The new success metric is citation visibility — and most businesses aren't tracking it at all.

The window to establish citation presence before AI Mode becomes the dominant search interface is closing. Businesses that optimize now build a compounding advantage — content already structured for passage extraction, entity signals already established in the Knowledge Graph, citation footprint already built across the sources AI Mode trusts.

What makes AI Mode unlike any previous search update:

  • Passage-level retrieval — citation happens at the section level, not the page level
  • Query fan-out — one question spawns dozens of parallel sub-queries across Google's index
  • 22.9 domains per answer — the widest citation pool of any AI engine
  • Only 13.7% overlap with AI Overviews — separate optimization strategy required
  • YouTube is the #1 cited domain in B2B queries — video content now directly impacts search citation
  • Google Search Console doesn't track AI Mode clicks — visibility loss is invisible without third-party monitoring
  • 3.3 brands per answer — more entity mentions per response than any other AI engine

WHAT WE WORK ON

Eight levers that drive AI Mode citation outcomes.

AI Mode optimization requires rethinking content from page-level ranking to passage-level extraction. We rebuild your content architecture and entity signals to match how AI Mode actually retrieves and synthesizes answers.

Passage-First Content

Restructuring pages so every section opens with a direct, self-contained answer that AI Mode's passage extraction layer can cleanly retrieve for a specific sub-query.

Sub-Query Coverage

Identifying the sub-queries AI Mode is likely to fan out for your category and ensuring your content answers multiple sub-queries — increasing the chance of appearing several times in the same answer.

Entity Markup

Implementing structured data that explicitly references products, services, people, and places — the entity signals AI Mode uses during query fan-out to match your content to relevant sub-queries.

Knowledge Graph Presence

Building and strengthening your business entity in Google's Knowledge Graph — the data layer AI Mode cross-references when verifying and citing sources.

Topical Depth

Building interconnected content hubs that establish your domain as an authority across a topic cluster — making you a reliable source across multiple sub-queries, not just one.

Video & Community Presence

YouTube is the single most-cited domain in B2B AI Mode answers. Reddit and LinkedIn follow. We build presence in the off-site formats AI Mode pulls from most heavily.

Technical Extractability

Auditing page structure for short paragraphs, question-based headings, inline definitions, and schema markup — the formatting signals that make passages easier for AI Mode to extract and cite.

Citation Monitoring

Tracking AI Mode citation performance with third-party tools since Google Search Console doesn't expose AI Mode click data — the only way to know what's working and what's being missed.

HOW WE WORK

Three phases. Built around passage-level visibility.

AI Mode optimization starts with understanding which sub-queries your buyers are triggering — and whether your content is structured to be extracted as the answer to any of them.

1

Query fan-out audit and baseline

We map the sub-queries AI Mode generates for your category and buying-intent questions. We audit which of your pages are currently being retrieved and cited, which are being retrieved but not cited, and which aren't appearing at all. This gives us a precise picture of where to focus — not a generic content recommendation.

2

Rebuild for passage-level extraction

We restructure existing pages and build new content with passage-first formatting, question-based headings, dense entity coverage, schema markup, and short extractable paragraphs. We target the specific sub-queries AI Mode fans out for your buyers — not generic SEO terms — and build content that can answer multiple sub-queries from a single page.

3

Build off-site presence and track citations

We build presence in the off-site formats AI Mode prioritizes — YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, industry publications — and establish third-party citation monitoring since Google Search Console doesn't expose AI Mode data. We report on citation frequency, brand mention count per answer, and which sub-queries you're winning and losing.

RELATED SERVICES

AI Mode visibility is built on the same foundation as everything else.

AI Mode lives inside Google Search — which means traditional SEO, AEO, and CRO all directly feed into it. The difference is that passage-level extraction requires an additional layer of content architecture that most SEO strategies don't include.

SEO

Google's index is AI Mode's retrieval layer.

AI Mode retrieves from Google's full index. Strong domain authority, technical SEO, and crawlability are still entry requirements — but passage-level extraction depends on content structure, not just ranking position.

AEO

Answer-first content is what AI Mode extracts.

AEO produces the passage-ready, schema-tagged, question-optimized content that AI Mode's fan-out retrieval favors. The same content structure that earns AI Mode citations also improves performance in AI Overviews and Gemini.

CRO

AI Mode referrals arrive already informed.

Buyers who click through from an AI Mode citation have already read a synthesized answer about your business. CRO makes sure your site meets the expectations of someone who arrived with context — and converts them before they go back to search for a competitor.

FAQ

Google AI Mode, in plain English.

How is Google AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Overviews appear automatically above organic results for eligible queries — they're short, automated summaries with lightweight citations. AI Mode is a dedicated conversational search tab that produces long-form cited responses, supports follow-up questions, and uses query fan-out to retrieve from a much broader source pool. Critically, they share only 13.7% of their citation sources. Ranking well for AI Overviews does not mean you'll be cited in AI Mode — they require separate optimization strategies.

What is query fan-out and why does it matter?

Query fan-out is the mechanism AI Mode uses to answer complex questions. Instead of running a single search, AI Mode decomposes the query into multiple sub-queries, retrieves sources in parallel, and synthesizes a cited response from the best passage matches. For businesses, this means a single buyer question might trigger 5–20 sub-queries — and you can be cited across several of them from a single well-structured page. Content that answers multiple sub-queries is worth significantly more in AI Mode than content optimized for a single keyword.

If we rank well in Google, will AI Mode automatically cite us?

Not necessarily. 68% of pages cited in AI Mode answers weren't in the organic top 10 for the same query. AI Mode evaluates passage relevance at the sub-query level — not page-level ranking. A page that ranks #12 but has a perfectly structured answer to one sub-query can earn a citation alongside pages that rank #1. Traditional ranking is an input, not a guarantee of citation visibility.

Why doesn't Google Search Console show AI Mode performance?

As of early 2026, Google has not added AI Mode-specific click data to Search Console. This creates a measurement gap — businesses can be losing significant AI Mode visibility without any signal in their standard analytics. Third-party AI citation tracking tools are currently the only way to monitor which queries are generating AI Mode citations, how often your brand appears, and how many entities per answer are including you.

Does video content matter for Google AI Mode?

Yes — significantly. YouTube was the single most-cited domain in B2B AI Mode queries, appearing in the top sources for 38% of answers in a 50-query B2B SaaS analysis. AI Mode pulls from YouTube for explanations, comparisons, and demonstrations that text pages don't cover as well. If you're creating video content around your category's key questions and publishing it on YouTube with strong titles and descriptions, it directly feeds into AI Mode's retrieval pool.
